17|21 architects reimagined the existing elementary school building to accommodate the growing needs of the community it supports with updated amenities and improved aesthetics. The entirety of the building’s finish was replaced to modernize and brighten the aesthetics of the building, departing from the dark institutional appearance, with focus directed to the main entrance, employing curtain wall system with bright panels and a clerestory addition to give the appearance of a new school departing from the old. The new clerestory addition frames a large central foyer space serving as an introduction to the building for users connecting to significant spaces such as the main office, learning commons and gymnasium. Interconnection between these spaces is further supported across the foyer by expanses of glazing and openings increasing the feeling of openness within the space. A central floor to ceiling aluminum screen, supports a floating wooden cross providing a sense of grandeur to the space. New interior finishes throughout the school utilize accents of colour to provide a playful and a comfortable feeling for the occupants.
